When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

جب زلفیں چاندی ہو جائیں
اور آنکھیں نیند سے بوجھل ہوں
تب آتشدان کے پاس صنم
دیوان میرا تم کھولو گی
اور دھیرے دھیرے پلٹو گی
یہ ورق مری تحریروں کے
تب یاد کرو گی آنکھوں کی
وہ نرم ملائم تابانی
وہ سائے گھنیری پلکوں کے

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

کی ہو گی کتنے لوگوں نے
اُن دلکش لمحوں سے چاہت
اور چاہا ہو گا حسن تیرا
سب جھوٹے سچے جذبوں سے
پر میں اک ایسا عاشق تھا
جو تیری روح کا زائر تھا
ترے رخ بدلتے چہرے کا
میں سچا ایک پجاری تھا

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

تب ایک اداس سے عالم میں
آتش دان کی سیخوں پر
تُم جھُک کے شکایت یہ کرنا
ہائے کیسے محبت نے اُوپر
پربت پہ بسیرا ڈال لیا
اور تاروں کے جھُرمٹ میں کہیں
چاہت نے چہرا ڈھانپ لیا
