Duties and Responsibilities

These internships are located in the Anti-Racism Office. The Anti-Racism Office was established by the UN General Assembly in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC) to oversee, coordinate and monitor the implementation of the Strategic Action Plan on Addressing Racism and Promoting Dignity for All (SAP). The mandate of the ARO is to combat racism within the UN Secretariat and promote a zero-tolerance approach to racism and racial discrimination.The Anti-Racism Office operates under three pillars: 1. Advocacy: Raise awareness about racism and racial discrimination within the UN through training programmes and events to enhance knowledge, foster dialogue, and promote behavioural change among leaders and staff. 2. Transparency: Review organizational policies, analyze workforce data, and share data on management practices to promote transparency. 3. Accountability: Hold managers and senior leaders accountable for a non-discriminatory work environment, create safe spaces for reporting incidents, build trust in the justice system, and effectively address complaints.The interns will report to either the Director, a Senior Programme Management Officer, or a Programme Management Officer of the Anti-Racism Office, depending on their assignment.The interns will support the work of the Anti-Racism Office in one of three functional pillars as follows:Advocacy:- Participate in developing a communications strategy to raise awareness and promote an anti-racism culture. - Research and create compelling content to inspire action against racism. - Identify key anti-racism communication themes relevant to the Organization. - Help organize anti-racism dialogues across the Organization. - Assist in planning discussions, talks, and brown bags on anti-racism topics. - Contribute to initiatives that promote participation in anti-racism programmes and events celebrating racial diversity and tolerance.Transparency: - Perform qualitative and quantitative data analytics for reporting to senior management and various departments.- Clean and organize raw data, use descriptive statistics, analyze trends, and create visualizations.- Create prototypes, demos, and visualizations for the Staffing Dashboard project to demonstrate value.- Simplify complex datasets into clear, innovative visualizations for stakeholders.Accountability:- Participate in research to develop effective anti-racism strategies within the advocacy framework of the Strategic Action Plan at the UN Secretariat.- Support and contribute to developing anti-racism advocacy activities per the Strategic Action Plan.- Contribute to initiatives that promote cultural transformation towards racial equity across the UN Secretariat.- Assist in preparing reports on implementing the Strategic Action Plan, focusing on advocacy pillar activities.- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for is required. Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Masters or PhD. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
