The Portfolio Manager will play a critical role on the team evaluating and recommending funding to impactful social enterprises around the world. At first, you will support the front end of our diligence process, evaluating core criteria key to our investing strategy. Eventually, you will independently lead end-to-end deals, working across the full investment lifecycle of pre-diligence, diligence, investment recommendations and monitoring/learning. You will engage with a wide range of stakeholders from impact investors to entrepreneurs across all sectors and geographies.

Requirements

Specifically, you will:

  • Support in the execution of Rippleworks’ venture-friendly and equitable process for making impactful grant and debt investments
  • Evaluate referrals as potential investment opportunities to ensure that Rippleworks invests in high-impact social ventures
  • Develop and maintain strong and authentic relationships with aligned investors and other referral partners to source and diligence investment opportunities
  • Collect, analyze, and monitor portfolio data to inform learnings, support ventures in achieving their impact goals, and improve our work
  • Support the team’s efforts to develop and execute on new products and services to better support our investment portfolio

About You

  • Business Insight: You have experience working directly with a social impact portfolio. You apply your knowledge of the social venture ecosystem and the broader ecosystem to support ventures in our portfolio and to advance Rippleworks’ goals.
  • Decision Quality: You make smart, timely decisions with limited information. You are a strong critical thinker, and you are able to walk someone else through your thought process in a clear and concise way.
  • Instill Trust: You gain the confidence and trust of others through honesty, integrity, and authenticity, and you always follow through on commitments.
  • Effective Communication: You develop clear, appropriate communications that account for the needs of different audiences. You articulate your thoughts in a concise, direct, and thoughtful manner. You distill ambiguous, complex ideas and data into simple and clear written materials. You actively listen to gain a full understanding of any situation.

Core competencies for all Rippleworks employees

  • Customer Focus: You always center the needs of the end user (whether external social impact organizations or internal stakeholders) and seek out opportunities to stay close to social ventures to understand and meet their evolving needs.
  • Agile Learning: You continuously and actively learn through experimentation when tackling new problems, using both successes and failures as growth opportunities.
  • Interpersonal Skills: You relate openly and comfortably with diverse groups of people. You use empathy to build relationships and work collaboratively in a team environment and are particularly attuned to different and at times competing stakeholder needs and requirements. You treat everyone fairly and equitably.
  • Managing Ambiguity: You’re able to navigate dynamic, changing situations and make decisions or create a path forward with imperfect or incomplete information. You remain calm when things are ambiguous and comfortably handle risk and uncertainty.
  • Driving for Meaningful Results: You consistently and effectively deliver results, mobilize others to achieve shared goals, and identify ways to improve and contribute.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of relevant work experience, with at least two years of experience managing or supporting the end-to-end investment lifecycle of a social impact investment portfolio (e.g., sourcing opportunities, conducting due diligence, and/or making recommendations)

  • Strong track record of building and maintaining authentic relationships with key stakeholders and knowledge of the social impact ecosystem

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate organizations based on specific criteria (e.g., depth of impact and business model viability) with imperfect information

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including experience interacting with impact investors, executives, and/or entrepreneurs

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, including demonstrated ability to monitor and analyze a portfolio of grants and/or investments

  • Track record of executing and delivering quality results

  • Be inspired by meaningful work: You will see and feel the tangible impact of your work on a daily basis.
  • Travel the world : Everyone at Rippleworks has the opportunity for at least one international working trip a year to see our impact in person. Our Study Abroad program funds personal learning experiences for employees to better understand the different geographies, cultures, and sectors that we work in. And we know travel can be tiring! Our No Place Like Home policy encourages employees to take a day off after work trips to catch up on sleep, do laundry, and spend extra time with their family.
  • Kickstart your lifelong journey of giving back: Through our Community Grants program, employees have the opportunity to give a $50K grant to a local community nonprofit doing meaningful work in an area that the employee is passionate about. We also provide all employees with an annual $2,500 charitable donation match for financial and volunteer hour contributions.
  • A culture that values professional & personal growth: We provide an external professional coach for every team member who wants one and a learning budget to put towards professional development. We also hold monthly team-building, regular lunch & learns, and team celebrations (birthdays, milestones, anniversaries, holidays).
  • A diverse and inclusive workplace: That actively seeks and attracts people from different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives.
  • A flexible, remote-first work environment: Team members have flexible time off, set their own work hours, and decide whether to work remotely or in an office.
