Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Nurse Aide Transport Escort (NATE) is an Integral part of the patient care team providing prompt, courteous, and customer-focused service to the patients, visitors, and co-workers. The NATE receives assignments from the Supervisor and/or dispatcher and is responsible for transporting patients within the hospital and for miscellaneous functions as well. The NATE contributes to service excellence by fostering collaboration among and between team members as well as ancillary departments.
FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Obtains and completes patient transport assignments from a designated supervisor/dispatcher via their ROVER or manual assignment.
2. Introduces self to patients, identifies patient appropriately, explains the nature of the trip, and transports patient to and from patient care areas with their belongings and medical equipment via wheelchair, stretcher, in a safe and appropriate manner. Utilizes the elevators assigned for patient use only.
3. Notifies appropriate personnel upon arrival /departure of patient and/or miscellaneous items at unit/department.
4. Maintains standard precautions and adheres to the isolation precautions including proper use of personal protective equipment as defined in EHR and isolation precaution signs located outside of patients' rooms.
5. Observes proper procedures and techniques during patient transport. Monitoring patient status throughout transport, reporting any change in patient's condition (difficulty breathing, complaints of discomfort, etc.) to nursing staff.
6. Transports patients with their belongings and medical equipment via wheelchair to the main lobby for discharge in a safe and appropriate manner.
7. Obtains and maintains paperwork/chart as required with patient at all times during transport and releases chart only to authorized personnel
8. Documents patient transport activities including acknowledgement of request, in progress status, completion of requests, and delays accordingly via ROVER. If NATE is on manual assignments, communicates each step, including delays, to the dispatcher accordingly.
9. Transports decedents/belongings from patient care areas to the morgue as requested.
10. Picks up and delivers specimens and blood products to and from specified areas in a safe and timely fashion.
11. Maintains wheelchairs readily available for transport. Reports defective equipment to the manager for repair.
12. Observes Infection Prevention protocols when handling ROVER, medical charts, and medical equipment.
13. Disinfects ROVER, wheelchairs, and stretchers according to infection prevention protocols.
14. Demonstrates knowledge and adheres to fire safety, smoking restrictions, and infection control policies.
Minimum Qualifications Elementary school graduation or equivalent ability to effectively communicate with patients; Ability to keep simple clinical records.
