Job Description

The Department of Sociology at Stony Brook University seeks applicants for a Department Chair with strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.  The ideal candidate will have a track record of fostering transparency and faculty governance in their service work and will continue the Department's tradition of excellence in research and teaching. The Sociology Department is renowned for its focus on global phenomena and their connection to national dynamics. It also boasts growing, active research clusters in the areas of politics, culture, and computational social science.  The department has a large undergraduate major, one of the most popular minors on campus (in Health and Society), and a robust and nationally-recognized doctoral program. The University administration has committed to the department?s growth in the near future, to be guided by its new Chair.

The search is open with regard to methodological specialization. We are, however, particularly interested in scholars whose research overlaps with one or more of the Department?s strengths, including computational social science, environment, global and public health, race and ethnicity, international development, inequality, politics, and culture. We welcome applicants at the advanced Associate or Full Professor rank.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate strong written/oral communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Be ready to serve at least one three-year term as Chair and extend the department's culture of inclusiveness and community.
  • Have a demonstrated track-record of publication in nationally or internationally-prominent venues within Sociology, as well as a clear pathway to continued excellence in the field
  • Contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the Department and University

Required qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Sociology. Advanced Associate or Full Professor. 2-3 years of experience in faculty leadership.

Preferred qualifications:
Demonstrated Record of a productive research agenda. Research/teaching complements existing strengths in Sociology. Evidence of or potential for excellence in teaching. Record of efforts on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
