Summary of Job Duties: You will be responsible for supervising autopsy technician staff and will provide support for all morgue functions, in service of assisting and supporting the state forensic pathologists. Your job duties will include day-to-day supervision of morgue staff to ensure compliance with internal policies, consistent service delivery, review of and establishment of morgue procedures, maintaining the inventory of morgue equipment and supplies, as well as management of weekly work schedules. You will be responsible for interviewing and recommending the hiring of new staff members, provide or arrange for training of your subordinates, evaluate subordinates’ performance and recommend personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, or disciplinary action to ensure adequate and competent staffing. In addition, you will be required to perform usual morgue operations including providing technical support to state forensic pathologists in preparing for and conducting medicolegal autopsies, all receiving and releasing of human remains to funeral homes or investigators, proper chain of custody over property and its associated paperwork, all morgue equipment operation and maintenance coordination. You will report to the Forensic Administrator and work closely with the Chief Medical Examiner and the Deputy State Medical Examiners in the performance of these duties. Minimum Qualifications: Four years of lead work, supervision, management, or progressively related experience in forensic science for an accredited laboratory; OR A bachelor’s degree in natural science, physical science, forensic science, or a closely related field AND one year of experience managing in an accredited forensic laboratory; OR A master’s degree in natural science, physical science, forensic science or a closely related field; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Qualifications: You must be able to provide credible sworn testimony in a criminal or civil proceeding arising from the performance of duties. Preferred Skills: Experience managing technical staff and day-to-day operations, including planning and directing workflow to effectively utilize available resources while maintaining a flexible, adaptive approach. Experience and proficiency directly supervising employees, including training staff, evaluating performance, and providing coaching to union-represented subordinates. Demonstrated ability and commitment to providing clear and thorough communication to direct reports, as well as all internal and external partners. Demonstrated ability and willingness to make well-informed, effective, and timely decisions, using sound judgment to evaluate potential impacts of those decisions. Experience and proficiency in autopsy assistant practices, including obtaining biological specimens and performing eviscerations and complex dissections during post-mortem examinations.
