Essential Duties
Environmental Vector Control and Surveillance Intern - This is a paid internship for the summer of 2025 in which we seek to hire a student. This opportunity is for an undergraduate level student who is in a Environmental related program to work within our Department of Public Works, Environmental section.
Desired Area of Study: Environmental Science, Biology, Public Policy and Planning
Desired GPA: 2.50 or better
Desired Student: College Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
Start Date: May 16, 2025
End Date: By the start of the fall semester (depending on the student selected their availability and performance, the internship could possibly continue across multiple semesters.)
Work Hours : Flexible (no more than 29 hours per week)
Work Location: Public Works - Environmental Services section. In-person with remote work possibility depending on the skills of the student selected. 10431 Woodman Road, Henrico, VA 23060.
Internship Status: This is a paid internship at the hourly rate $16.00
This is an internship position for a college student who will work with the Environmental Services section within our Public Works Department. The student would be assigned to work on current projects in the Vector Control and Surveillance Program.
Projects would involve:
- Pollinator Enhancement Project vegetation and insect surveillance and site management
- Driving and Navigation for Pesticide Treatment Technician
- Mosquito Surveillance and Identification Aid
- Research and project design and aid
- Administrative project implementation and duties
- Other duties as assigned
- Other project could include: Public speaking and outreach participation and coordination, Treatment Route Revisions within County GIS, Generation/Implementation of Pilot Run for Increased trapping/surveillance, Implement Tick evaluation procedures, Treatment navigator, Pilot tick trapping and surveillance methodologies and design, Implementation of Rainfall collection/data recording, and Mosquito Identification.
This internship position will be assigned to the Standing Water initiative within the Department of Public Works within the Engineering and Environmental Services Division. The internship will provide a n opportunity for an intern to gain valuable experience in research, field collections, data entry and analysis, and community outreach.
The Desired student should have: - Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship.
- Excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively.
- Excellent attention to details; excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Ability to multitask and manage priorities.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as apart of a team.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
Through the course of the Internship the student will gain knowledge of: - How arboviral vectors contribute to disease transmission
- Pesticides and their role in an integrated pest management (IPM) structure
- Registered Pesticide Technician criteria & certification requirements
- Environmental factors impact pest/vector populations and disease
- Mosquito bionomics and identification procedures
Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Pursuing a undergraduate or associate degree in a field relevant to internship; GPA of 2.50 or better desired.
Experience : in pursuit of degree of college-level program in relevant degree program; relevant job, volunteer or previous internship experience.
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.
