Description This position will address the immediate practical operational needs for collections inventory and discoverability. This position will perform original and copy cataloging, support efforts related to digitization, Archives and Special Collections discoverability and access. Under the general supervision of the Head of Collection Management, applies complex library concepts to resolve a wide range of issues relating to resource description and cataloging for all Library collections in collaboration with the Metadata Analyst, Research and Technical Services Managing Archivist, and Digital Archivist. The Collection Management unit includes acquisitions, collection development, electronic resources management, and metadata. We perform activities related to the selection, acquisition, maintenance, preservation, and discoverability of scholarly resources for access by the UCSF community. Our goal is to understand our users’ scholarly resource needs and to provide the best possible user experience. Archives and Special Collections is a dynamic health sciences research center that contributes to innovative scholarship, actively engages users through educational activities, preserves past knowledge, enables collaborative research experiences to address contemporary challenges, and translates scientific research into patient care. Cataloging Provide original and copy cataloging (resource description and cataloging) for materials in all formats for the library’s general and special collections according to current national/international cataloging standards, accepted best practices, and local policy. Create, edit, and review catalog records for archival collections. Create, edit, and review catalog records to ensure library holdings are consistent and updated across the library’s databases and OCLC WorldCat for new and existing acquisitions. Participate in special projects related to cataloging, database maintenance, and authority control. Support efforts related to digitization, archives and special collections discoverability and access, and other metadata-dependent efforts to describe, manage, expose, and share collections with users. This includes working collaboratively to digitize and ingest archival collections according to archival best practices. create metadata for collections. Physical Processing and Maintenance Classify print materials according to national and local practices, apply barcodes, labels, or print slips to physical materials to prepare for shelving. Perform quality control and shelf checks as needed to identify and correct inventory errors. Assist with managing the library’s physical collections for deaccessioning. Create basic inventories and rehouse collections. Reading Room Support Helps maintain security and physical control over the collections. Assists with managing the archives reading room operations, including overseeing researcher visits and paging materials for use in the reading room. Other duties as assigned Document and update procedures and workflows. Serve on appropriate working groups. Contribute to the Library’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related area and 5+ years of directly related work experience; and/or equivalent experience/training. Thorough professional knowledge of a full range of specialized functional subject area activities. Thorough knowledge of applicable systems and databases. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve complex problems, and recommend solutions. Demonstrated interpersonal skills including diplomacy and tact in dealing with a variety of people and situations. Thorough knowledge of library data transformation techniques and software tools. Familiarity with library cataloging standards and controlled vocabularies (e.g., MARC, AACR2, RDA). Demonstrated commitment to the value of equitable and inclusive metadata. Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in working with databases. Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with tools used for bibliographic description, such as OCLC Connexion or Record Manager.
